“I found an outlet in art, and through a series of failed attempts, I learned how to appreciate working with a material like clay.”

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts Department provides an important balance to the traditional academic emphasis on language, spoken and written, as the prime means of self-expression. Art education provides more than specialized manual skills; it demands new awareness of our surroundings and intensifies our response to the visual environment in which we live. The work of each course attempts to shape and reshape our experience into tangible form. Through projects, class discussion and evaluation, the Department seeks to encourage the creative process in every student. To recognize art as a process results in emotional, spiritual and intellectual growth and, to a greater degree, insures our humanity and cultural survival.

The Arts Center expands on the strengths and scope of the Visual Arts program. It houses a spacious painting studio, as well as the Foster Gallery. These spaces contribute to a growing visiting artist program, where professional artists exhibit in this premiere gallery space, visit classes and critique the work of students. This brings a diverse array of techniques and approaches to the creative process onto campus and connects Nobles to the larger artistic community of Boston and beyond.
