Middle School Visual Arts

Visual arts projects are often independent<br>but can be collaborative.
Visual arts projects are often independent
but can be collaborative.

The Visual Arts Department provides an important balance to the traditional academic emphasis on language, spoken and written, as the prime means of self-expression. Art education provides more than specialized manual skills; it demands new awareness of our surroundings and intensifies our response to the visual environment in which we live. The work of each course attempts to shape and reshape our experience into tangible form. Through projects, class discussion, and evaluation, the Department seeks to encourage the creative spark in every student. To recognize art as a process results in emotional, spiritual, and intellectual growth and, to a greater degree, insures our humanity and cultural survival.

All Visual Arts classes are taught in the Art Wing of the Pratt Middle School which includes separate studio spaces for painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, digital imaging, printmaking, and Middle School art.

The Middle School Arts program is based on the belief that each student should be exposed to three artistic disciplines: Visual Arts, Music, and Drama. Every Class VI student is required to take a Middle School Arts course which offers Drama, Music, and Visual Arts in a quarterly rotation along with a computer class. Class V students are required to take at least two courses from the following: Drama, Visual Arts, Band, Chorus or String Ensemble.
