The 2010 summer program will run from June 27 - August 6, 2010!
The UMass Boston-Noble and Greenough School Math/Science Upward Bound Program (MSUB) is a six-week residential program, serving 50 high school students with promising academic records and a desire to improve their future prospects. MSUB specifically identifies students interested in math and science who wish to pursue advanced study and careers in related fields. Our students come from the greater Boston and Lawrence areas, primarily from the John D. O'Bryant High School in Boston and Lawrence High School. In addition to meeting family income and educational qualifications, candidates must demonstrate, through their academic records and teacher recommendations, the potential to succeed in an accelerated math/science program, as well as the ability and desire to work hard.
Campus Life
The Math/Science Upward Bound Program, in conjunction with UMass-Boston, is hosted on the 187-acre campus of Noble and Greenough School in Dedham. A coeducational, partial-boarding school serving students in grades 7 through 12, Nobles makes available its vast array of academic buildings, residential and athletic facilities, and playing fields. Facilities including a swimming pool, gym, tennis courts and several playing fields, are available for use during organized activities and in leisure time. Ten counselors live in the dorm with the 50 students and provide round-the-clock supervision. MSUB students, faculty and staff eat their meals as a community in the school cafeteria or "The Castle," an H.H. Richardson-inspired mansion that presently houses food facilities and some faculty and staff.
Faculty and Staff
Demonstrating Nobles' commitment to MSUB, the program's faculty comes primarily from the Nobles teaching community. Our counselors (C/A) are upper-level college students and all are either Nobles or UB graduates. A registered nurse is on-call at all times, and a licensed lifeguard is available during swim time.
School-Year Commitment
Summer participants attend a follow-up program at Nobles one Saturday each month throughout the academic year. This school-year component is organized in workshop format around specific class topics. Occasional extracurricular activities may follow the class component. Complimentary bus transportation is provided from Lawrence and Boston.
Financial Information
Tuition, room and board, transportation and all program activities are free of charge. Participants receive a weekly stipend of $15 during the summer and a monthly stipend of $20 during the school-year component.
