The newly launched Nobles ACHIEVE program, geared to Middle School students in rising grades six through eight, has started off strong with all 25 slots filled long before opening day. The ACHIEVE students, all residents of Boston, have been drawn from Boston public schools, the METCO program linked to the Lincoln public schools, Boys and Girls Clubs in Roslindale and Mattapan, Roxbury Prep Charter School and other area schools.
ACHIEVE is a tuition-free educational program emanating from Nobles’ public purpose goals and serving low-income Middle School children. Through a rigorous six-week summer academic curriculum complemented by year-round tutoring and support, ACHIEVE works to instill those academic skills and levels of confidence that will place students solidly on the track to college.
“The goal is to provide ACHIEVE students with a program that mirrors the Noble and Greenough experience,” said Achieve Director Connie Yepez. “We will have morning meetings, develop close student/staff relationships, and provide a high level of academic challenge.”
Among the staff for the inaugural summer session are two Nobles faculty members, science teacher Jamileh Jemison and math teacher Eric Nguyen, along with recent graduates David Jackson ’04 and Christina Crowley ’05. Selected as interns are Shabrina Guerrier ’09 and two members of the Class of ’08, Misha Kaufman and Nihal Shrinath.
