Go Out and Reinvent Yourself

ASSEMBLY Jun 14, 2011

At the final Assembly of the 2010-2011 school year, teachers celebrated scholars, athletes and writers with awards, the community bade farewell to Middle School Director of Athletics Rob Feingold and Provost Bill Bussey lobbed a few samples of summer reading into the audience. He also announced that this summer’s community read is Dave Eggers’ Zeitoun, a nonfiction account of a man who rode out Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and afterward paddled the flooded city in a canoe, rescuing neighbors, caring for pets and distributing fresh water. Coco Woeltz ’12 sang Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me,” accompanied by Eliza Loring ’12 on the piano and Belle Tuttle ’13 performed a reinvention of the Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” Reinvention was also on the mind of Head of School Bob Henderson; as he sent Classes II through VI off to their last classes of the year, he asked them to stretch themselves beyond their comfort zones this summer, to try new activities and spend time with new people, to think hard about the year just past and to come back in September ready to “invent yourselves anew.”
