Frozen Fenway

BOYS VARSITY HOCKEY Jan 5, 2012

The only thing better than the sound of "Sweet Caroline" at Fenway Park was the sound of Noble and Greenough School fans cheering on the boys' varsity hockey team as they took on—and beat—rival Milton Academy. The teams faced off for the first time this season at Frozen Fenway 2012 during a quadrupleheader of Independent School League's boys' and girls' games.

Marc D. Beer is a huge proponent of learning by doing. The CEO of Aegerion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:AEGR), a biopharmaceutical company, calls himself a “serial entrepreneur.” He’d like to see his children, Nobles graduate Nick ’11, now at Notre Dame, and current students Catherine ’13 and Lizzie ’15, learn the skills it takes to step out on their own. To Beer, that means being involved in experiential learning.

For more than 100 years, the Sixth Class has performed Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol during the annual holiday Assembly. A Hanukkah reading, The Power of Light, was added to the program more than decade ago. This year, the Assembly docket also included musical performances by faculty member Michael Turner; a cappella group, Imani; and a duet by Chris Collins-Pisano '12 and Belle Tuttle '13.

Music in the Air

ARTS Dec 13, 2011

On Dec. 9, more than 100 Nobles musicians, both Middle and Upper School students, joined together in Lawrence Auditorium for the fall Choral Concert. Performances by the Middle School Chorus, Chamber Singers, Nobleonians, Middle School a cappella, Imani, Greensleeves and Concert Choir featured both traditional and contemporary music.

Class I student Felix Liang was selected as a WCVB-TV Channel 5 APlus Scholar and was featured on a segment that aired on Nov. 28, 2011. The APlus Scholar is “a signature NewsCenter 5 series that shines a spotlight on outstanding high school seniors who have overcome incredible odds.” Channel 5’s David Brown reported the story on location at 10 Campus Drive.

Each November, Nobles Middle Schoolers set up shop in the Castle and join together to create quite the assmbly line. They work together to prepare applie pies—just in time for Thanksgiving. Some students are on peeling and coring duty, while others mix and measure spices.

The Chinese Acrobats left the Nobles community in awe during Long Assembly on Wed., Nov. 9. They contorted their bodies, juggled a variety of objects, tumbled through hoops and even used a performer as a human jump rope. The well-anticipated Assembly will be one to remember for a long time.

Teamwork and camaraderie are alive and well at Nobles—in the classroom, on the fields and on the stage. Performing Arts faculty member Jillian Grunnah welcomes students of all levels into her dance studio and encourages them to learn choreography as an ensemble. They work together as a team and learn about styles and techniques from all over the world.

On October 31, the Nobles community fully embraced the Halloween spirit. Morning Assembly was full of special surprises including music, skits and a Day of the Dead video. Class I united in jungle-themed costumes representing zebras, Tarzan, leopards and many others. The Parents’ Association also hosted a surprise lunch for Class I students.
