Winter Season Success

Nobles Athletics has once again achieved enormous success this winter. Three teams ended the season as ISL Champions: girls skiing won their ninth title in the last 10 years; girls basketball won their ninth consecutive ISL title; and girls hockey won their twelth consecutive ISL Championship.

Over the years, as the school has expanded and updated its facilities, it has taken great care to preserve the charm and history of campus.

Hands-On Learning

The Nobles science program is an area of the curriculum designed for experiential learning. Students form thoughtful questions and hypotheses through an array of learning techniques in the classroom, lab and field, including hands-on projects, experiments and design. This year, various grade levels engaged in three different science projects, allowing students to find answers for themselves.

Finding Balance

Math teacher Eric Nguyen had a simple task for his Class IV geometry students: balance a small, cardboard triangle on the tip of a pencil eraser. Students jumped at the challenge and, through trial and error, discovered the trick—find the balance point, or centroid, of the triangle. One by one, each student smiled with found success.

Music is in the air at Nobles. On Thurs., Jan. 12, 2012, at 7 p.m. five talented groups of Nobles musicians will join for the Jazz, Blues, Guitar and Percussion Concert. The Middle and Upper School Jazz Bands, Drum Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, and the Bulldawg Blues and Soul Revue will perform works by Cedar Walton, Jade Castrinos and Rick Holmstrom, among others.

It's hard to predict the season's highlight before most of the games have been played, but the girls' varsity basketball team knows that nothing can top the annual Nobles vs. Cotting School friendly game, played on Fri., Jan. 6. This year marks the fifth match-up between Noble and Greenough and Cotting, a private special education day school in Lexington, Mass.

The only thing better than the sound of "Sweet Caroline" at Fenway Park was the sound of Noble and Greenough School fans cheering on the boys' varsity hockey team as they took on—and beat—rival Milton Academy. The teams faced off for the first time this season at Frozen Fenway 2012 during a quadrupleheader of Independent School League's boys' and girls' games.

Marc D. Beer is a huge proponent of learning by doing. The CEO of Aegerion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:AEGR), a biopharmaceutical company, calls himself a “serial entrepreneur.” He’d like to see his children, Nobles graduate Nick ’11, now at Notre Dame, and current students Catherine ’13 and Lizzie ’15, learn the skills it takes to step out on their own. To Beer, that means being involved in experiential learning.

For more than 100 years, the Sixth Class has performed Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol during the annual holiday Assembly. A Hanukkah reading, The Power of Light, was added to the program more than decade ago. This year, the Assembly docket also included musical performances by faculty member Michael Turner; a cappella group, Imani; and a duet by Chris Collins-Pisano '12 and Belle Tuttle '13.

On Dec. 9, more than 100 Nobles musicians, both Middle and Upper School students, joined together in Lawrence Auditorium for the fall Choral Concert. Performances by the Middle School Chorus, Chamber Singers, Nobleonians, Middle School a cappella, Imani, Greensleeves and Concert Choir featured both traditional and contemporary music.

On Thurs., Dec. 8, students in Chris Pasterczyk's Advanced Projects in Physics class unveiled a Rube Goldberg-inspired project. The Nobles community—students, faculty, staff and parents—huddled together in CP's classroom to watch the "Doomsday" machine take out the fictitious Sunder City.
