Guatemala: Class I, II, III

Our 8-day trip will allow students to experience the diversity and complexities of Guatemala through community service work and cultural exploration. Nobles students will volunteer with our partner, Safe Passage, an NGO dedicated to bringing “hope, education, and opportunity to the children and families living in extreme poverty around the City's garbage dump” (safepassage.org). Possible volunteer tasks include tutoring, leading activities, and engaging with the students at Safe Passage through play and teaching English classes. In a country where only 3 out of 10 children graduate from 6th grade, Safe Passage’s work to increase school retention rates and provide access to equal educational opportunities is critical to the development of the country. Through our work and contributions to Safe Passage, Nobles students will make a direct impact on the lives of these children and the future of Guatemala. In return, Nobles students will develop a wider understanding and perspective of other cultures, ideas, and economic inequality, while also gaining confidence on how to create and effect social change at both the local and global level. Prior to and throughout the trip, students will learn about the culture, history, and current situation of the people of Guatemala.

We will spend 2 days engaging in cultural exploration in addition to our service. We will spend the first full day exploring the cultural and natural beauty of the colonial city of Antigua, Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city will be our home base for the duration of our stay. On the other day, we will either visit a coffee farm, climb a volcano, take a day trip to the gorgeous Lake Atitlán, or discover the gems of the local markets and cuisine.  Students will return to Nobles with unique and memorable experiences that will serve them to become leaders for the public good.
