Class IV & V South Africa

In 1994, Nobles led its first trip to the Republic of South Africa, and we continue this tradition in March 2018 with members of class VI and V (grades 8 and 9). This trip provides an opportunity for different types of service at a number of sites, starting with tutoring and landscaping/gardening projects at St. Brendan's School and Bakhita Village in the Limpopo Province. Next, there will be childcare, tutoring and outdoor labor projects in Kliptown, an impoverished settlement near Johannesburg.

Within the past two years, the Nobles community was fortunate to welcome 10 members of the St. Brendan’s Catholic Secondary School community, Thulani Madondo, the Director of the Kliptown Youth Program and 2012 CNN Heroes finalist, and 10 members of the Kliptown community visit campus. As both St. Brendan’s and Kliptown have welcomed us into their home and shared their community with us during our recent trips to RSA, we were thrilled to be able to return the gesture! Our March journey will end with the opportunity for students to experience extraordinary wildlife at close range on safari at Manyeleti Game Reserve.

In advance of their departure, students will learn about the history of South Africa and of apartheid through assigned readings, movies, and discussion. The students also will organize fundraisers and drives to help support the schools and organizations with which we enjoy long-standing relationships.

Through close collaboration with young people in South Africa, the trip is a true cultural exchange. The group visits the major metropolitan centers of Johannesburg, rural communities in Limpopo, and sites of historical importance, such as the Apartheid Museum and the Hector Pieterson Museum. Nobles students will gain an understanding of poverty and the struggles of an emerging economy in a way that they cannot simply through discussion or reading. All Nobles travelers leave South Africa with new friends, fond memories, and a meaningful connection to the country and its people.
