To Wyatt Ellison

Your California grandparents are proud of you—for your heart, warmth, encouragement of us, cousins and all you meet, and for your numerous achievements.

Set and adjust your sail as you have in the past—to noble ends, high goals—and let success follow, even through gales of life.

Set your soul to aid others through your accomplishments so that all will know, as do we, of your genuine concern. In that way, you will be assured of true joy in life.

Wyatt, Vikrum, Hannah, Harrison, and Charlie,
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all of your contributions to AP Chemistry. You all made significant contributions to your respective sections. You earned the respect and affection of your Class II companions. You all grew cognitively by leaps and bounds. But what I will remember most is your spirit and humor. It was a blast to teach you, to learn together, and to indulge in our all too frequent tangents. When we went virtual. you never missed a beat. I salute you and love you,

– Ms. McElwee

To Katie Armstrong, Maeve Connolly, and Cassidy Piersiak

Sincerely,

– Mr. Resor

Sincerely,

– Mr. Resor

To Tate Donnelly

Tate,
Thank you for your professionalism, goodwill, and remarkable problem-solving abilities. No matter what Calliope needed, you stepped up and delivered—in what seemed like an instant—and always with your signature smile and shrug like it was no big deal. It was a big deal and so are you. Congrats on your graduation. We will miss you!!!

– Betsy VanOot

To Hannah Lowry

Hannah,
You and Hailey were great leaders of Calliope and I can’t thank you enough for your work. Your quiet, thoughtful guidance showed in everything you accomplished this year, from a fantastic coffeehouse to an on-line publication in the middle of a really tough spring. I know there are lots of students taking notes on how to be like Hannah Lowry—you inspire the best in those around you!

– Betsy VanOot

To Hailey Brown

You and Hannah were great leaders of Calliope—always full of enthusiasm, ideas, and ways to make the arts at Nobles more inclusive and more visible. Thank you for the investment of heart and soul. As terrible as this quarter has been, I feel so lucky that the circumstances forced us to be in touch on a more regular basis. Congrats!

– Gia Batty

To Rahul Singh

Rahul,
I just finished watching Awards Night and I am just beaming with pride about the award you received for your amazing photography. You are such a modest person, never looking for more attention and always pointing the spotlight to others, and so it was wonderful to see you get that recognition in such a public way. Now everyone knows how talented and thoughtful you are! I will miss talking with you Rahul and hope that your graduation does not end our conversations. Please stay in touch!

– Gia Batty

To Ali Castro

I got so many texts after your Instagram post ran and I know you warned me about it, but it really made me feel so good. It also just let everyone know what a caring and compassionate person you are. – Gia Batty

To Marc Smith

Well,
Here is the extent of my hockey knowledge: A team is nowhere without a goalie, and what a great goalie you were for Nobles during the past three seasons. Your record and save percentage and all of that stuff I leave to Coach Day and Coach Spence, but you can’t coach clutch and you can’t coach character, and you had both. Best of all, after games… wins or losses, you came to school and were modest or measured and you kept focused on your academics. I know you will succeed at Wesleyan, and I hope you know me well enough to know that I don’t mean only on the rink.

– Alden Mauck

To Tate Donnelly

Tate!
I have said this many times, but I honestly think that you could do literally anything you put your mind to. In the short time I’ve known you, you have written a novel, built numerous websites, made yearbooks, to name just a few. I have loved knowing you and can’t wait to see what you do next!

– Gia Batty

To Olivia Patz, Julia temple, Kiley Flynn, Betsy Matthew, and Sophia Lowry

Congratulations to the best group of advisees ever. I’ll miss you so much next year, but can’t wait to heal about all of your wonderful adventures!

– Ms. Batty

To Bryan Thomas

Bryan,
Thank you for sharing your intellect, curiosity, and passion with Nobles over the course of the last four years. SpeechMasters was fun and provided all who participated with excellent tips that will serve them well as they continue to use their voices. Keep using yours and practicing your craft! All my best on the next leg of your journey.

– Jenny Carlson-Pietraszek

To Peirce Kenney

Congratulations PK! It has been great being your coach and your advisor over the years. Best wishes on your future endeavors.

– Mr. Brown

To Ella, Maeve, Caroline, Dayyana, and Teddy

The DL advisory will simply not be the same without you five. Thank you for starting all of my Tuesday mornings with a HUGE smile, and for being such great role models for the rest of the crew. We love you, we are proud of you, and we will miss you all deeply. Come back and visit us, but only if you bring snacks:).

– Ms. DL and our advisory crew

To CJ Burke

Welp. Congrats on graduating high school—“doing what you were expected to do”—even if it did take you five years. I respect your conviction in pursuing your interests and not letting anyone else dictate your actions or beliefs. I’m proud of you and excited to see you carve your own path at Wisco. Don’t let being the only one of us to actually graduate from Nobles go to your head.

– Cam Burke

To CJ Burke

Welp CJ, you did it. Congrats on being the first Burke to officially graduate from Nobles. You finally have something you can hold over my and Cam’s head…maybe your grades, too. Although you may think graduating high school is simply “expected” it really is a great accomplishment to do it at a prestigious school like Nobles. I know you’ll go on to have an extremely successful career and make a huge impact on the world. Continue to pursue your passions and remain strong in your convictions. Enjoy the Nobles alumni network, I heard it’s top-notch.

– Cal Burke

To Christopher Millay

Receive, Believe, Achieve, Achieve we must!

– Nora, Janim and Stephany

To Nick Hazard

Nico,

el camino, y nada más;
caminante, no hay camino:
se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace camino,
y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino,
sino estelas en la mar.
Antonio Machado

– Profe Robertson

To Kevin Harrington

Congratulations, Kevin! I am so proud of you and all you have accomplished at Nobles. You are an amazing grandson who brings me so much joy and love. I wish you much success and happiness as you follow your dreams. “If you can dream it, you can do it.”

– Anne Reilly

To Hailey Brown

Querida Hailey,

Lo he pasado muy bien estos años contigo. Te voy a echar mucho de menos. Cuídate, estrella brillante. Cumplirás todo lo que desees.
Te dejo este poema:

Caminante, son tus huellas
el camino, y nada más;
caminante, no hay camino:
se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace camino,
y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino,
sino estelas en la mar.

To The Class of 2020

Thank you for the deeply humbling honor of being selected to be your graduation speaker this year. I suspect that either you were just curious to discover how many metaphors I could cram into a 7-minute speech or, due to our being apart for so long, some of you simply confused me with Mr. Baker. But I am honored nonetheless. It is the set of the sail, and not the gale, that determines the direction of a sailboat. It is the set of your soul that determines your goal, and not the calm, nor strife. Godspeed.

– Mr. Nickerson

To Ali Castro, Yara DaSilva, Eleni Kinney, Sophia Lowry, Christopher Millay, Kat Poole, Harry Roberts, Vikrum Singh, Bryan Thomas, Katie Armstrong, Hailey Brown, CJ Burke, Brett Cosby, Kiley Flynn, Andela Giordano, Charlie Guerra, Hannah Lawry, Will Moore, Olivia Patz, Tatiana Rachlin, Jake Sanghavi, Claire Shapiro, Rahul Singh, Emre Yalcindag, and Lauren Young

To my wonderful AB Calculus students—it has been an amazing journey, from Fermat’s clever approach for instantaneous rate of change all the way to Fermat’s Last Theorem (did anyone pick up on those bookends??). While I hope you came to appreciate how useful this tool of calculus can be, what is more important to me was that we took this journey together. I will never forget all of the small but joyful moments along the way, the struggles, the individual triumphs, the surprising conclusions with a bow. You are a great class, and I wish you all the best in the years ahead.

– Mr. Nickerson

To Casey Taitel

Congratulations, Casey, you unflappable all-star! It has been a great privilege working with you as both your teacher and advisor these past two years. I will miss torturing you with those weekly news quizzes (though you do know your fruits)! I know that you will continue to take great advantage of all your opportunities in the years ahead, for you worked very hard here, and you accomplished a lot. Congratulations, we are so proud of you.

– Mr. Nickerson

Your journey from three auditions with zero seasons of theatre to show for it to a critical member of the Les Mis ensemble, principal actor in Proctor, and successful playwright, with a would-have-been senior project in theatre as well goes down as one of the most remarkable leaps forward in a senior year that I’ve seen here. Great job! I hope you stick with it!

Dear Eleni,
Congratulations! I only wish I could have collaborated with you this spring and seen your lighting design for PROCTOR come to fruition. For four years, you have poured yourself into our work in the theatre. Never have you promoted yourself or complained, never have you made it about yourself, but rather you have collaborated with students and faculty with the singular goal of making excellent theatre. In addition, you were also a teacher yourself, helping so many less experienced electricians learn the basics of theatrical lighting. Great job, Eleni!!!

To Ali Castro

Congratulations, Ali! I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching and directing you over the past few years. Your voice is powerful and special, and your ability to prioritize the group, the project, and the story have thoroughly impressed me. Julia!
I know that this spring has not been what you’d hoped or imagined, and I’m sorry. But I did want to take a moment to commend and thank you for all of your contributions to Nobles theatre. From leading the way in musical ensembles to that monstrous spring when you performed significant roles in both the SDP and the mainstage, you have always brought you very best to every single rehearsal and performance. You made the people around you better. Thank you for joining us so many times, including this spring when it required the unfortunate sacrifice of MUN.
Congratulations!

“Yet all experience is an arch wherethro’
Gleams that untravell’d world whose margin fades
For ever and forever when I move.
How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish’d, not to shine in use!

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”

– Coach Ulrich

To Meredith McBride, Alara Ozguc, and Devon Tyrie

We will miss you three so much next year! Advisory won’t be the same, but you’ve set an awesome example of what it means to show support and care for your peers. Please keep in touch and come back to visit.

Four years of advisory, four years of impressions of hands, bouncing on balls, competitive SET, laughter, tears, lessons, and successes. It has been a joy and a privilege to work with you both. You will be missed, but I know you are heading on to amazing journeys. Remember when things get rough (because they will, that is life) that you have the strength in you to persevere and the intelligence to know when you should ask for help. Great things are ahead!!
All my best,

To Jeffrey Alphonso and Dayyana Poux

Jeffrey and Dayyana,
We arrived at Nobles from Brooke Roslindale in 2016, all the three of us eager to learn and take advantage of all that it had to offer us. In the six years that I have known you, I have seen you both grow so much. Your ability to overcome obstacles, your bravery in fighting for equity and justice, and your willingness to laugh in good times and bad, are truly inspiring. Nobles will not be the same for me without the two of you, but I cannot wait to hear about your respective journeys. You got this!

– Ms. Sayles

To The Class of 2020

I have watched from afar your graceful, courageous, engaged and extraordinary navigation of these unprecedented times. While there may have been many disappointments in missing your last ______ (fill in the blank), you have made this a most memorable spring, the end of a most memorable time at one of the rare places on earth. A quote that I have sometimes read to my students in recent years (author unknown) is the following: “You can’t measure a high school student by her/his GPA or test scores, nor can you evaluate a college grad by what school s/he attended or their grades. What is harder to measure but far more important is a young adult’s level of grit, engagement, optimism, integrity, people skills, street smarts, stamina, and determination.”

I am quite certain that you have been shaped indelibly by this shared experience, before and especially during the pandemic. What is crucial is how you move forward, what “marks” you plan to make on the world in all the ways you have learned how. Step up. Look up. Step out. Look out (for those in need, especially). Be brave. Be loyal. Be grateful. And always remember that Nobles has been your home. It was mine for thirty years, and it will forever be in my heart. As are you. Congratulations, Class of 2020.

ps. To those scholars with whom I shared the classroom last year, you know who you are. xo

I have so enjoyed my time with so many of you – whether it has been in the classroom, on the soccer field or in places like South Africa or Rwanda. Each of you who I’ve gotten to know has made my day brighter, enlivened a class, asked good questions, reflected thoughtfully on the gift that Nobles is for all of us. Thanks to all of you for your patience and understanding in the midst of Covid and for keeping all of our spirits up. Congrats and good luck – you’ll be missed.

– Ben Snyder

To The Class of 2020

I am so excited to work with the Class of 2020 as GRADUATES of Nobles in the years to come and I know that this group will remain connected like no other class. Historically, those classes who have faced memorable times at Nobles have stayed close and it has been inspiring seeing how you’ve all faced the last few months of your senior year. Your 5th Reunion will be here before we know it. Until then, STAY CONNECTED, and we hope to see you soon.

— Kate Treitman Brown ’99, Director of Graduate Affairs

To The Girls from S2S

I miss seeing all of your faces during our meetings. There was no better place to be than in a room full of women of color to lift each other up and to love each other. If it wasn’t for this group of amazing women, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I am sure that a lot of underclassmen are saying the same thing about their Big Sisters from this year. I wish you girls the best of luck and I want to remind you to never let anyone or anything burn out your light! You are all strong, independent, and beautiful women ready to embark upon whatever comes next. I know for a fact that you will make your own mark on the world. I love you girls! Congratulations!

To The Class of 2020

From the minute you all stepped into Baker 111 as nervous, scared, self-doubting ninth graders, I knew there was something special about the Class of 2020. Something that has always stuck with me and that I’ve never forgotten and that will always have a special place in my heart. When I made the tough choice to leave Nobles last year, the hardest thing to come to terms with was the fact that I wouldn’t be there for your senior year. You are so special. Remember that, okay? Remember all you’ve endured and accomplished and gotten through…together. Individually, you are all pretty great, but collectively, as a class, you guys are a strong and resilient bunch who cares for one another. All the best from the West Coast!

 — Mike Hoe
