During March break, 156 students and 40 educators traveled the world on six different adventures through Nobles’ Experiential and Community-Engaged Learning (EXCEL) program.

Travelers explored and learned together, strengthening their relationships, while also connecting with new people and cultures, as well as with longstanding EXCEL partners. Leaving their phones behind, students were present for one another and more engaged within their new environments.

“EXCEL trips stretch the boundaries of the heart,” says Director of EXCEL Laura Neubauer. “By stepping into someone else’s story, we bridge the gap between ‘us’ and ‘them.’ Our trips aren’t just about seeing new places; they are about growing our capacity to love across differences and discovering who we are as individuals in this vast, beautiful world.”

A middle school student who traveled to South Africa said, “This trip has taught us many lessons and lots of information that we will remember when we arrive back in America. Practically, we have learned about South African history, but also about its effects and personal impacts. We have learned to be grateful and prioritize happiness and gratitude instead of jealousy or discomfort, to approach things with an open mindset, and always do your best to help. This trip has been a life changing experience that none of us will forget. While we are all sad to go home, we are excited to tell people about our trip and all of the incredible things we have witnessed.”

March travelers experienced six diverse destinations:

  • Rwanda (Resilience and Renewal: A Journey of Memory, Education, and Empowerment; Classes I–III)
  • Spain (Language, Culture, and Connections; Classes I–IV)
  • Guatemala (Education and Community Development; Classes I, II, III)
  • South Africa (History, Adventure, and Connection; Classes V and VI)
  • The Island School, Bahamas (Sustainable Living and Environmental Engagement; Classes I–IV)
  • Colombia (Musical Exchange; Nobles Symphony Orchestra)

Trips slated for this June include a language and history trip to France; a history, art, and culture trip to Japan; and a river-rafting journey along Idaho’s Salmon River.
