Earlier this semester, Deb Harrison’s AP environmental science students took a field trip to the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences. Before the center closed its nets and the birds headed south for the winter, students witnessed up close the object of their studies. After netting the birds, banders quickly collect data—such as the sex, weight and age of different species—before releasing birds back into the wild. Bird banding allows scientists to track migration patterns and the health of bird species over seasons and years.
